The Execution Layer

The Cover Symbol

The symbol is intentionally unresolved.

The Structure

A system rather than an illustration.

The symbol does not depict a person, machine, brain, institution, or other literal subject. It is an abstract structure defined by relationships between its parts.

Its divided but continuous form reflects tensions that recur throughout The Execution Layer: participant and system, agency and constraint, observer and observed, record and explanation, intention and outcome.

The structure is ordered, but it is not closed. Its upper forms approach without fully joining, while the lower structure terminates before reaching the isolated point beneath it. The result suggests conditions and boundaries without implying that those conditions eliminate agency.

The Unresolved Point

Its relationship is visible. Its identity is not.

The small point beneath the larger structure is deliberately left undefined.

It may be read as the participant approaching a system, an outcome emerging from one, the observer attempting to locate itself, the record that remains, or the question carried forward.

Read in one direction, the individual enters conditions larger than themselves. Read in the other, an outcome emerges from those conditions. The symbol does not establish which direction is correct.

Interpretation

The symbol represents the relationship between the participant, the system, and the question. Which part represents which depends on where the observer is standing.

The Observer

The symbol is not intended to resolve into one official meaning. Its ambiguity is part of its function.

A reader may encounter the same artifact differently after moving through the investigation. Nothing in the symbol itself needs to change for its meaning to change.

Look at it before you read the book.
Then look at it again when you’re finished.
The symbol won’t have changed.
